## Burj Khalifa Overview

The Burj Khalifa, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is a marvel of modern engineering and architecture. It is not only the world's tallest building but also holds several other records.

### Design and Construction

Designed by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the same firm that designed the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in Chicago, the Burj Khalifa's design is inspired by Islamic architecture, particularly the Great Mosque of Samarra. The building's Y-shaped floor plan maximizes the amount of exterior wall and thus the views and natural light for interior spaces like residential and hotel rooms.

The structural system of the Burj Khalifa is described as a "buttressed core," which consists of high-performance concrete walls supported by a central hexagonal core. This design is both efficient and robust, allowing the building to support itself laterally and keeps it from twisting.

### Records and Statistics

- **Total Height**: The Burj Khalifa stands at a total height of 829.8 meters (2,722 feet).

- **Roof Height**: Excluding its antenna, the roof height is also a record-setter.

- **Number of Floors**: It has the highest number of stories in the world, with over 160 stories.

- **Highest Occupied Floor**: The building has the highest continually occupied floor.

- **Observation Decks**: The Burj Khalifa houses the highest outdoor observation deck in the world, located on Level 148 at 555 meters (1,821 feet).

- **Materials**: The construction used 330,000 cubic meters of concrete and 55,000 tonnes of steel rebar, taking 22 million man-hours to complete.

### Features and Amenities

- **Observation Decks**: "At the Top, Burj Khalifa SKY" on Level 148 provides breathtaking views of the city, and there are also observation decks on levels 125 and 124.

- **Sustainability**: The building collects 15 million gallons of water sustainably each year, which is used for irrigation, the cooling system, and to supply the Dubai Fountain.

- **Elevators**: The Burj Khalifa has the elevator with the longest travel distance in the world and is among the fastest, traveling at 10 meters per second.

### Cultural and Architectural Significance

The Burj Khalifa is a multi-use building that includes restaurants, a hotel, residential apartments, office space, and is a major tourist attraction. Its park, designed by landscape architects SWA Group, is based on the flower of the Hymenocallis, a desert plant, and is watered by the building's cooling system.

### Timeline

- **January 2004**: Excavation begins.

- **January 2010**: Official opening of the Burj Khalifa.

- **January 2009**: The structure tops out at its final height.

The Burj Khalifa is named in honor of the President of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, and it stands as a symbol of Dubai's rapid development and its place on the world stage as a hub of modernity and luxury.
